| Session 2: Collecting Participants’ expectations |
|
Facilitators: GREEN Foundation Team
Following the inaugural session, participants were divided into four groups to discuss and collect their learning expectations. After the presentations, the organisers explained that they would track them to ensure that most requests would be dealt with during the programme.
Broadly the expectations were related to:
• Understanding organic farming: concepts, contrasts with chemical farming, impact on production and productivity, how to shift to organic farming, etc.
• Soil fertility management: how to manage soil fertility in the absence of chemical
fertilisers, how to prepare different types of composts (farm yard manure, vermicompost, jeevamruta, etc.), when to use different composts, how to use different composts, where
to buy them, can poultry manure be considered as organic, simple soil testing methods, etc.
• Pest and disease management: how to manage pests and diseases in the absence of
chemical pesticides, how to prepare pest repellents, what is the waiting period for harvesting/consuming produce sprayed with repellents,
how to manage pests and diseases in paddy, banana and vegetables, etc.
• Fruits and vegetables: How to start a kitchen garden, how to grow various vegetables,
seed production in organic farming
• Marketing and linkages: how can a farmer make up for loss of production when converting to organic, are there special marketing arrangements for organic farmers, certification (types
and costs), what schemes are available with the government
• Others: Seed production, preservation and seed treatment, role of animals in organic farming (what is an appropriate number of cattle to have for an acre of land?)
