What was the GREEN Foundation?

The Genetic Resource, Ecology, Energy and Nutrition (GREEN) Foundation was an Indian non-governmental organisation working in sustainable agriculture and agricultural biodiversity. Its work began in 1994 with a small group of women farmers in the village of Thalli in South India, and it was formally registered as a public charitable trust in February 1996.

Its focus was conserving local seed diversity and supporting smallholder and marginal farmers — community seed banks, participatory organic certification, documentation of indigenous agricultural knowledge, and soil and water conservation practices including tank silt application. By its own account the network had grown to include more than 2,400 farming families. Its work was cited by the UNDP Equator Initiative, IFOAM, Food Tank, La Via Campesina, and academic researchers including Cornell University's SRI programme.
